After the deadliest shooting in U.S. history this past Saturday night at Pulse–a gay bar in Orlando, FL, our nation is in shock realizing the weight and severity of such a hate crime. Our hearts break for the 49 individuals killed and 53 injured, and we extend our deepest condolences to the friends and family of those harmed.
Many take something as simple as a bar for granted, but in most cases for those in the LGBT community, it can truly be a safe haven. LGBT-friendly bars and social events can be one of the few places a member of that community feels safe, comfortable, or carefree. As full supporters of the LGBT community, we’re so deeply saddened knowing anyone feels at-risk simply for holding their loved one’s hand in public. We’ve come a long way; fighting for marriage equality and against discrimination, but we recognize there’s still so far to go. Anti-LGBT sentiment is rooted too deeply in our society and around the world. We pledge to stand up for the LGBT community, for civil rights, and for love. We pledge to be advocates for those who have lost their voice. And we pledge to provide solace and comfort to the LGBT community through our commitment to not only supporting their community, but moreover for including them into our own.
